Yesterday was the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York and D.C. where muslim extremists hijacked passenger planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Pretty much all new networks were running specials on the event and covered the opening of the new memorial that opened in New York. I missed most of them because of Opening Day for the NFL, but I thought I'd comment briefly on the events.
There is no question that as a nation, we have changed alot since then. Mostly for the better. Our intelligence has improved and there have been numerous attacks that have been thwarted since then. We've killed Bin Laden. Al-Qaeda is crippled and the Taliban are out of power in Afghanistan. There are many reasons to be proud of our accomplishments since then.
We also have seen some of our privacy stripped away though the Patriot Act and the new TSA back scatter machines and groping procedures. Having flown recently to New York in July, I have to say that the TSA stuff didn't really apply to me. At DFW, there were 2 lines, 1 for the regular metal detector and 1 for the back scatter machine so I just got in the metal detector line. And flying back out of LaGuardia, both were metal detectors. I've heard other airports are worse but my experience has been alright.
I thought the ceremony in New York was nice because both presidents were there and it wasn't just Obama. For all of Bush's many faults and failures, you have to give him credit for keeping the terrorists on the run.
